Canada Will Be Delaying 2020 Parents And Grandparents Immigration Program Due To Coronavirus Pandemic

The government of Canada has announced that they will be delaying the opening of their 2020 Parents and Grandparents Visa Program due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
Due to the high numbers of the coronavirus patients in the country, the government of Canada has announced that they will be placing a temporary halt for the program.
According to IRCC (Immigration Refugee and Citizenship Canada), the launch of the call for expressions of interest to apply for the program was anticipated in the coming weeks.

The temporary deferral of the call for applications is not expected to impact when parents and grandparents will arrive in the country.
The Immigration Refugee and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will be processing the applications.
The Parents and Grandparents Program allows the citizens of Canada and its permanent residents to send out sponsorship to their parents and grandparents so they can obtain permanent residency status.
The program is so popular that the federal government has sought various ways over the past decade to manage its intake since 2011.
Last year, over 100,000 Canadians expressed their interest in sponsoring a parent or grandparent even though there were only 21,000 permanent residence spots available.
Similarly, Canada is targeting the admissions of 21,000 immigrants under the PGP each year through the 2020 to 2022 Immigration Levels Plan.
The IRCC has tried numerous approaches to manage the PNP in recent years and continuous to identify ways to refine its approach.
These have included using a first-come, first-served model, where the applications are processed in the order in which they were submitted.
It has also tried a lottery model, whereby sponsors were randomly selected.
It remains to be seen what the PGP intake process will look like once the IRCC launches it later this year.
